If you’ve been frustrated with the weak facilities in the Mail app, HoudahSpot is again first choice.įinally, I’m not going to look at Alfred, although it does provide a front end to Spotlight search. It also has at least one unique feature: it can search Mail’s mailboxes in Catalina and Big Sur, something which Finder search no longer supports. For anyone fed up with the Finder’s steadily more puny front-end to Spotlight search, this should be your first choice. These are both entirely dependent on the Spotlight indexes, but provide a far superior interface which supports defaults, templates, logical combinations of criteria, multiple excluded locations – the list of features appears almost endless. HoudahSpot is more expensive, at around $/€/£ 34, and is the more powerful and sophisticated sibling to Tembo, which is slightly less than half the price. In this case, it did search EXIF metadata, but doesn’t cover material stored in extended attributes, for instance. However, it doesn’t appear to support customised search of the Spotlight index, based for instance on specific metadata. The result is a useful composite of hits achieved using both techniques, which is the best of both worlds. It tackles this in an interest way, using Spotlight’s index first when that’s enabled and available, to return a quick set of hits, then makes its way steadily through its own content search, again primarily of text-based formats. Thomas Tempelmann’s Find Any File (FAF), which costs around $/€/£ 6 direct or in the App Store is primarily a tool for searching file systems, but also throws in basic content search for free. Although content search doesn’t appear to be its primary purpose, it includes a simple set of controls which allow you to search for text in text-based files. The free app EasyFind, by DEVONtechnologies, is Spotlight-free. As there currently appears to be no alternative to Spotlight’s index, search tools which don’t use it are going to be at a severe disadvantage, both in terms of performance and coverage. ![]() Grinding your way through a million or more files inspecting each for a string of characters inevitably takes a very long time, and is entirely dependant on gaining access to their contents. This article looks at what’s available.īefore going any further, it’s important to establish that, in general, searching modern disks containing 500 GB or more of files, there’s nothing better than using an index. There are many possible causes of failure to find, which I will examine in another article, but common to both criticisms is the need to find a replacement. ![]() ![]() The two most common criticisms of Spotlight search are that it fails to find items which we believe are there, and that its searches return too many hits to let us locate the item that we want.

![]() While we’re awaiting additional details on the Zen 4c architecture itself, at this point we do know that AMD has taken several steps to boost their CPU core density. Ultimately, whereas AMD’s mainline Zen 4 EPYC chips are designed to hit a balance between performance and density, these Zen 4c EPYC chips are purely about density, boosting the total number of CPU cores available for a market that is looking to maximize the number of vCPUs they can run on top of a single, physical CPU. The Zen 4c cores would use the same ISA as AMD’s regular Zen 4 architecture – making both sets of architectures fully ISA compatible – but it would offer that functionality in a denser design. Here's a representative episode, on Sulphur! Of course the series goes into broad (but hilarious) 'off the wall' territory with its inclusion of episodes on ghosts and so on, but the style is so specific and detailed that I still get that nostalgic feeling from watching. If travelling one stop on the bus costs 30p, how far can they each travel to Swindon before they have to exit the bus and walk the rest of the way?"), and so on! Now all of these details are so bizarrely specific to a certain era of early to mid-1980s schooling, as well as to a certain era of BBC television in particular, that it was amazing to see it beautifully parodied in the first series of Look Around You, down to the specific filming styles, noodling guitar music over the countdown clock, mysteriously empty labs, the use of the ubiquitous-in-schools BBC Micro Computer during the opening credits, the incomprehensible experiments for pointless goals, the use of bizarre names for characters used in examples during hypothetical examples used in the programme (something which I remember in my class regularly used to cause mirth in its appearance in mathematics textbooks in particular, due to its bizarre juxtaposition with two very English names - such as "Judith has 20p, John has 60p and Partario has £1.50. There would be glimpses of the end of the last schools programme (which invariably was of more interest than the one we would be meant to be seeing!), and then trailers for other programmes until the countdown clock to the next programme appeared, letting the teacher know they were at the correct point to start the screening. ![]() I personally remember the best part of all these classroom screenings was seeing brief glimpses of other programmes as the teacher was scanning back and forth through the tape that they had recorded the broadcast on in order find the correct starting point. Combined with the almost ritual way in which the enormous boxy television (on its wheeled metal stand that lifted it up above the audience's heads and which made it seem to tower imposingly over the class, whose attention was often fixed directly onto it's blank screen as soon as it appeared) was wheeled into the room and carefully plugged in by the teacher, it brought the excitement of not getting taught for an hour or so to almost fever pitch! Later on during my primary school years I can still remember the ripple of anticipation that went through the class when a rumour went around that instead of being taught for the morning that we were going to be shown a television programme instead. The actual goals of many of the experiments went completely over my head at the time, likely due to my age, but I still remember liking to watch test tubes being filled with strange liquids or bleeping electronic machines taking readings of the results. I remember when very young (before I was of the age to be going to school) watching some of these programmes that turned up on early 1980s morning television where scientists set up experiments in bizarrely empty laboratories. This comprises six ten minute episodes done in a lovingly detailed 'Programmes for Schools' style that brings back so many childhood memories for me. Bizarrely, one of the few shows that I wouldn't think would possibly travel well outside of the UK is getting a Region 1 release (annoyingly with extra commentaries too!) - the first series of Look Around You. ![]() Disorganization in our home, car, or work space. Not being able to remember important dates, events, or facts. We're often frustrated because of things we blame ourselves for, such as: ![]() Causes of frustrationįrustration is the bane of having ADHD.
